The main through ways are 19th Ave. and 7th St. These are really the only ways to get from the Central area of Phoenix to the north and Sunnyslope is right there, but it takes a drive off the main streets to find what it has to offer.
Sunnyslope was born as a health mecca and a repository for 'lepers'. It later fell in distinction to a point where it was one of the least desirable places in Phoenix and a place to keep away from, but those two histories are what makes it so interesting and eclectic post 2000 when it began to attract wealth, artists, developers and expanded the interest in persevering this community character.
There are several groups working to preserve Sunnyslope, some of the links are noted below, and they are doing a tremendous job considering the task at hand. Of course, the many new residents who have made it their new home are helping buy restoring homes and building new one. This is a big market for infill development. Some of the most interesting homes are here.
Drive up Central Avenue then branch out either west or east to find mid-century modern homes, contemporary homes, ranches, bungalows, new and historic home of varying styles, each with it's own character: nothing like the monotones suburbs.
And of course, the location is what's helping Sunnyslope attract these new residents with the Mountains to the north and the urban city to the south.
