Metro Light Rail Platforms: ASU at Van Buren and Central Ave

The Van Buren light rail station and platforms sit on both Central Ave. and 1st Ave. and straddle the Central Phoenix Transit Station.  The station also includes several historic city buses and is surrounded by a park and high-rises both old and new

This is a major platform always full of people.  The density of buildings is much greater here then a many of the other station and includes the recently adds Arizona State University downtown campus which continues to grow and bring lots of life to the downtown Phoenix area.  This is where the high-rises surround the station, with thousands of people busy at work and study.

The Platform Art

"...the environment is one of movement and change. Washington State artist Ries Niemi choseto focus his artwork in a detailed ribbon of stainless steel running the length of the 320-feet of railing that lines both platforms.

The sculpture consists of shiny stainless steel, hand forged into a variety of textures and grains. The color and texture of the material, along with the organic quality of the design, contrast with and complement the mechanical and geometric construction of the railing itself.

The scroll designs are based on designs from historic local buildings and also refer to western leatherwork, natural forms, and classic forms used in railings and fences for generations. Rather than reading as individual panels, the ribbon is one continuous piece woven throughout the entire station." From the Metro Art Book (opens in PDF).

This station is also located next to Civic Space Park which is also a new welcome addition to the Downtown Phoenix area. "The park is innovative and interactive and the best time to visit is when the sun goes down.  It's once the natural light disappears that the main sculpture inspired by the monsoon cloud formations lights up as if a thundercloud shining with flashing warm light of lightning.  The idea is very appropriate as the monsoons in the valley are often exemplary, beautiful and sometimes frightening in their power."

If you get off here there will be plenty to explore and see, but don't expect too many residential buildings in the vicinity: except for a few ASU dorms the area is all business, government and education.
