Jefferson and Third Ave. Metro Light Rail Station In Focus

Posted by Joanna Zajusz on Thursday, July 22nd, 2010 at 3:23pm.

The Jefferson/Washington and 3rd St. Metro Light Rail platform takes you to the Chase Coliseum, The Civic Center, Phoenix Symphony Hall and major businesses in downtown Phoenix.

It's one of those few stations that makes one feel truly in a large city as most of the surrounding buildings are high-rises.

The Civic Center wall on the Washington Station heading toward the North has a collection of Bola Ties: The bola tie was designated the official neckware of Arizona in 1973. A bola is a type of necktie often made of a cord, braided leather with decorate metal tsp and an ornamental clasp and or slide.

The Art

"The many cultural events of downtown are heralded at the 3rd Street and Jefferson and 3rd Street and Washington stations by the sleek, modern artwork of Los Angeles artist Cliff Garten.

These Station Beacons are an elegant addition to the new Phoenix Civic Center and continuous development in the city’s core.During the day, the repetitive linear forms of the Brancusi inspired sculptures harness the power of the shining sun and reflect the bustle and movement of the city center.

When the sun sets, the internal changing colored lights reflect the city’s nighttime neon character."  (Metro Art Book - opens in PDF)
