Immigration Issues
The Diane Rehm show via our local KJZZ station had a very enlightening program about Mexican immigration trends.
Guests include:
- Steven Camarota: director of research, Center for Immigration Studies.
- Frank Sharry: founder and executive director of America's Voice, former executive director of the National Immigration Forum.
- Francisco Gonzalez: the Riordan Roett Chair in Latin American Studies at Johns Hopkins' graduate school, SAIS, in Washington D.C.
This is a program that's very relevant to us in Arizona and in general. I'm not going to give you my opinion here, it's not relevant. You should listen to this program so that what ever your opinion is, it can be supported by relevant and 'accurate' information, not tainted by the bully pulpit of the politics of some of our representatives in state governments.
"Once in a while it really hits people that they don't have to experience the world in the way they have been told to."→ Alan Keightley
...and on another related note.
"If you missed the news, the new San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is being built in China as modules to be assembled in California."
So now we don't let Mexicans from down-under take the jobs we don't want, but we're allowing China to build our bridges while millions of people are out of work? ...and playing games with the deficit and the United States' credit worthiness?
Summer Is Here.
No **it Sherlock, some would say, but it's here and we all talk about it, from the lack of rain, the drying vegetation starving even for a few drop from the pale blue sky, the once in a hundred years dust storm to the explicit humidity; this is our winter, this is when we run from interior to interior hoping to escape from the elements, it's just not the toe freezing, nose running cold but the burning dehydrating heat and intense light of the sun which seems to be stronger year by year.
The snow bird went back to their summer setting in the cooler north leaving many people here to work park time or with no work awaiting their return so they too can relax with the comfort of their bank account being a little bit fuller from paydays at the hotels and even hospitals: many of which cater to these temporary visitors.
Aphorism Du Jour
"The difference between technology and slavery is that slaves are fully aware that they are not free."
From: The Bed of Proscurtes by Nassim Taleb - well worth having for all time.
A Decade of Depreciation
I remain amazed when I see some homes come up for sale and the current 2011 for sale price is lower then 10 years ago. 10 years ago was a long time ago and the market was fare from over heated and those persons purchased for the long term with or without the expectation of appreciation and they got depreciation.
Not only is the price lower in dollar for dollar terms, but when you account for inflation the real loss is even greater. Buy for $100,000 in 2000 and sell for $100,000 in 2011 is quite bid different. What could you buy now for $100,000 vs a decade ago? 4 cars then and 2 cars now, for instance. Though, apparently, you get more house for the dollar now.
